A fabulous round-shaped antique pendant in beautifully worked eighteen-carat gold studded with Opal cabochons and an oval faceted garnet. The garnet is 9.0 x 7.0mm, the opal is 4.0mm
The pendant is not a hinged locket but hides a secret- the back is a clear glass cap that could be used to stash a sentimental keepsake such as a lock of hair or a tiny perfumed sponge, a frequent practice in the 19th century.
Around 1880 many gold treasures dating back to the ancient Etruscan era (700-300 BC) were being discovered in Italian tombs, leading to the emergence of the Etruscan Revival as Victorian jewelers sought to recreate the style. Craftsmen employed considerable skill to make finely detailed pieces using multiple gold working techniques such as granulation and filigree and typically employing high-carat gold and semi-precious stones.
