Guido Guidi's new photobook, "In Veneto 1984–89," begins with the image of a large "eye" framed by the blinds of a shop window in Mestre. This eye opens as if in warning, announcing the origins of the act of photography itself.
The book contains previously unpublished photographs taken by Guidi between 1984 and 1989 using a Deardorff 8x10 camera. This was the first time he used a large-format camera throughout an entire project. The focus of the photography was a region in central Veneto, known for its rapid transformation into a landscape that was extremely uncertain, marginal, and without a clear hierarchy.
The places he visited, spanning the provinces of Treviso, Vicenza, Padua, and Venice, appear as if they are part of the same drawing, the same place, poignantly telling the story of how the vast rural areas were transformed and driven into a form of fragmentation called urban sprawl.
The photographs taken in these cherished places also bring to mind the three truths that Robert Adams mentioned in "Beauty in Photography": "geography," "biography," and "metaphor."
