In 1911, Leon Leonwood Bean invented the Maine Hunting Shoe, which had a rubber bottom and a leather upper, after seeing his feet get cold and wet when water seeped into his boots while hunting. Then, in Freeport, Maine, the brand was established in 1912, named L.L.Bean after the founder's initials. After that, the quality was continuously improved and its quality was highly regarded, being used for Arctic expeditions and the like. Later, the lineup expanded from hunting to outdoor wear and goods, and it grew into a major American outdoor goods manufacturer due to its enhanced quality assurance.
