This beautifully hand-painted Russian lacquer box is an authentic example of Palekh miniature art, signed in gold by the Palekh artist Y. L. Posokhin (Ю. Л. Посохин). It depicts the legendary Russian epic hero Ilya Muromets - greatest bogatyr (hero-knight) - shown in a classic contemplative pose amid stylized mountains, clouds, and foliage. Palekh artists frequently illustrated scenes from his heroic life, especially the symbolic moment where he pauses in deep reflection before a major quest.
Signed in gold by Y. L. Posokhin (Ю. Л. Посохин) (Handwritten note on inside of box concurs with signature on box.) Gold scroll border around the lid and sides. High-gloss black lacquer exterior. Classic deep red lacquer interior.
